Links

Ancestry.com             Great place for starting genealogy research. They have census images, old newspapers, message boards, etc. A great deal of the content is free if you register (also free).  The really cool stuff, though, is by subscription.

Ellis Island                  This is the official site for Ellis Island, “American Family Immigration History Center”. They have a searchable database of names linked to images of the ships and passenger lists.  If your relative came through Ellis Island, there’s a good chance you’ll find them here.

FamilySearch             This is the site run by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It’s another great source for worldwide genealogy. They also provide you with the film numbers of any info you find so you can request to see it or order it at their Centers (there’s one here in Manhattan).

Genealogy.com          Another resource site, most of their stuff is by subscription only. They do have some exclusives such as INDEXED 1810 & 1900 U.S. Censuses.

NYC DORIS              This is the website of the NYC Dept. of Records at City Hall. They will do look-ups for you for a fee, but it’s more fun to go down there yourself if you can.

GedHTree                  I had to include this one. These are the people who produced the program to turn .GED files into HTML, in other words, family trees for the Web.  Did you really think I did all those trees by hand?
